Temporary financial equilibrium

چکیده

In a two-period pure exchange economy with financial assets, a temporary financial equilibrium is an equilibrium of the current spot and security markets given forecasts of future prices and returns. The temporary equilibrium model can then be interpreted as a Walrasian model where preferences depend on prices. This idenfication implies, among other consequences, the generic determinateness of the equilibrium solution. It also highlights the mechanism through which forecasts of future prices parameterize current market prices of goods and assets. JEL Classification numbers: D51, D52, D84, G12.

Financial Crises and Systemic Bank Runs in a Dynamic Model of Banking

What are the effects of unconventional monetary policies during panic-based financial crises? To address this question, I develop a dynamic general equilibrium model of banking. A novel mechanism gives rise to multiple equilibria. In the good equilibrium, all banks are solvent. In the bad equilibrium, many banks are insolvent and subject to runs. The bad equilibrium is also characterized by def...

An Intertemporal Model of Saving and Investment

The standard model of optimal growth, interpreted as a model of a market economy with infinitely long-lived agents, does not allow separation of the savings decisions of agents from the investment decisions of firms. Investment is essentially passive: the "one good" assumption leads to a perfectly elastic investment supply; the absence of installation costs for investment leads to a perfectly e...

Post-Mortem of a Stabilization Plan: The Collor Plan in Brazil

In an overlapping generations equilibrium model, the macroeconomic effects of confiscation of financial assets as occurred in the Collor Plan are studied by means of numerical simulations. The model is built on many features specific to the Brazilian economy, including a financial system dominated by banks that offer indexed assets and an uneven distribution of wage income and wealth. The frame...

Endogenous credit limits with small default costs

We analyze an exchange economy of unsecured credit where borrowers have the option to declare bankruptcy in which case they are temporarily excluded from financial markets. Endogenous credit limits are imposed that are just tight enough to prevent default. Economies with temporary exclusion differ from their permanent exclusion counterparts in two important properties. If households are extreme...
